Gary Olson is considered a media technology thought leader, media industry technology expert, and designer and project manager in broadcast systems design. Olson designed the broadcast, media technologies, distribution, media management, and media archive systems for the UN. As special consultant to the UN chief information officer, he created the UN’s first cyber security policies for their Global IT organization. Olson has presented a white paper to the NAB BEIT conference on cyber security and to other organizations on cyber hygiene. He recently moderated panels at the NY NAB/TVNewsCheck Broadcasters Cyber Security Retreat.

Olson is on the SVG Content Security Workgroup and the TVNewsCheck Cyber Broadcast Roundtable advisory board. These groups are working to establish best practice guidelines to help prevent cyberattacks and disruptions in broadcasting. He has written a number of articles on cyber security in media.

The second edition of Olson’s book Planning and Designing the IP Broadcast Facility – A New Puzzle to Solve was released in 2020 following the success of the first edition which is considered by the industry as one of the most comprehensive technical guidelines for making sound decisions implementing IP technology. He has created courses for SBE University and IABM online University on IP facility design. Olson is one of the contributing authors of the SBE Broadcast Engineering Manual.
